Broncos position preview: Could inside linebacker be Denver’s deepest position group? Editor’s note: Eighth in a series previewing the Broncos’ position groups entering training camp. Today, inside linebackers. On the roster (seven): Seth Benson, Jonas Griffith, Josey Jewell, Drew Sanders, Alex Singleton, Justin Strnad, Ray Wilborn. How many on the 53? Four or five. Most impactful offseason move: Re-signing Singleton to a three-year deal.Last summer the Broncos brought Singleton in on a one-year deal to provide depth and play special teams. All he did was rack up 163 tackles while forming a potent duo with Jewell and continuing to be a special teams standout. Denver rewarded him with a three-year deal with $9 million guaranteed and worth up to $18 million. Now he’ll be expected to be an every-down player and one of the veterans of the Broncos defense.Biggest question to answer in camp: How will Sanders’ role develop? The rookie impressed early in the offseason program and then was limited by an injury. Coach Sean Payton called Sanders “a pressure player” and the Broncos ...

Rockies Mailbag: German Marquez’s future, Bud Black’s job security and trade deadline thoughts Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag.Hello from the Pacific NW! Lots of decisions to be made soon with Rockies. Have you heard anything regarding German Marquez? It would be a tough end to his Rockies tenure if he’s not re-signed. Is there chatter about a multi-year extension to allow German to rehab with the team next year with an eye to having him at the top of the rotation in ’25 and maybe beyond? Also, a couple of Kris Bryant questions, if you’ll indulge me. In nearly every interview I’ve seen “KB” do, he says something along the lines that because he was elite early in his career for minimal pay, he deserves every penny of his current contract. That only works if the Cubs are paying him! Does he really not feel any pressure to be on the field and producing at a level befitting his salary? Secondly, do you thin...

Opinion: Mike Pence, a Republican of character and integrity

Opinion: Mike Pence, a Republican of character and integrity If you care about liberal democracy here and abroad, while maintaining civility, it might be time to give Vice President Mike Pence a second look in the Republican primary election. Pence may be ideologically more conservative than many in the electorate, but he is a good and honorable man and the White House, the country and the world’s stage would be in capable hands with him behind the Resolute desk.Americans should already know that the former vice president upheld his oath to the Constitution on Jan. 6, 2021, despite immense pressure and threats to his life. What many may not know is that Pence continues to call out former President Trump, telling an Iowa voter recently “President Trump was wrong about my authority that day. And he’s still wrong.”During a recent campaign event in Sioux City, Iowa, Pence was confronted by a voter who was unhappy with his actions on Jan. 6. “If it wasn’t for your vote, we wouldn’t have Joe Biden in the White House. Joe Biden shouldn’t be there.” ...

When will the heat wave end? For most, there’s no end in sight By Jennifer Gray | CNN meteorologistAs an unrelenting heat wave enters its 39th consecutive day, millions of people from California to Florida are asking: When will it end?The long-term forecast looks bleak. For most, the extreme heat will continue for the foreseeable future, with no end in sight for the rest of the month, but there is a brief glimmer of hope for some parts of the country headed into the weekend. An area from South Texas to Arizona to South Florida has had the worst of it and that will only continue. El Paso, Texas, has been in the triple digits for 32 consecutive days. In Miami, the record warm sea surface temperatures, combined with light winds are causing stifling heat: The heat index there topped 100 degrees or more for a record 37 consecutive days. Phoenix will break the record of 18 consecutive days at or above 110 degrees today and the streak will likely continue for at least another week or more. That longevity combined with the dangerously low overnight tempe...

Opinion: Cluster bomb use is an admission that it’s OK to kill civilians

Opinion: Cluster bomb use is an admission that it’s OK to kill civilians In 2008, more than 100 nations signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, a treaty that “prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions.”The United States did not accede to the convention. Neither did Ukraine nor Russia, both of whom are using these weapons in their seemingly forever war.A cluster munition is a weapon that keeps on killing long after its 72 submunitions, or bomblets, are shot in a shell from a 155 mm artillery weapon. Upon explosion in the air, they can litter an area the size of several football fields. If that wasn’t horrible enough, these submunitions have, according to various government estimates, a “dud,” or unexploded rate, of 2.35% to 6%. That means that every time a cluster bomb is employed, two to four of those 72 bomblets do not explode upon impact. But “dud” doesn’t mean these submunitions stay inactive. They can have the same dangerous lingering effect as a land mine. They stay active for decades. Children are often attract...
