Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in 5 sets to win Wimbledon for a second Grand Slam trophy

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 11:30:47 GMT

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — A poor start left Carlos Alcaraz a single point from a two-set hole against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. That sort of deficit is daunting for anyone, let alone a 20-year-old in his second major final, and against anyone, let alone Djokovic, someone who hadn't lost at Centre Court in a decade, someone seeking a fifth consecutive championship, and record-tying eighth overall, at the All England Club. Someone who won the year's first two Grand Slam tournaments and 23 over his career.Ah, but Alcaraz, last year's U.S. Open champ, wanted this shot at Djokovic, someone he called "a legend of our sport." Said it would make winning Wimbledon that much more special. And so Alcaraz managed to come through in that tiebreaker as choruses of “Car-los! Car-los!” from the stands competed with cries of his older, more experienced, more accomplished foe's two-syllable nickname, "No-le! No-le!” And then Alcaraz came through in a 32-point, 25-minute masterpiece of a g...

The results of a new survey indicate nearly 1 in 5 U.S. workers experience working under “toxic” conditions, with 22% of workers saying it has negatively affected their mental health. These concerning numbers come from the 2023 Work in America Survey from the American Psychological Association.“The number of individuals who report experiencing a toxic workplace without protection from harm is troubling,” Arthur C. Evans Jr., Ph.D., APA’s chief executive officer, said in a release. “No one should feel fear at work. It is clear there is much work to be done to foster a positive work environment for all workers in the nation.”The mental health implications are severe, according to the study. Those who reported a toxic work environment were three times more likely to experience mental health harm when compared to those who reported a healthy workplace. City Councilor Gabriela Coletta joined a chorus of parents concerned about new exam school admissions policy, calling on BPS to release data and revisit the tier-based structure.“While I commend the intention of the updated Exam School Policy to increase access and diversify our exam school student population, as with any new policy, there can be unintended consequences that leave out the very students we hope to serve,” Coletta wrote in a letter last week to BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper and shared on Twitter. The admission’s policy, approved by the Boston School Committee in July 2021, scores applicants based on GPA, an admissions test score and additional points — 10 points awarded to students at schools with over 40% economically disadvantaged students and 15 to students in DCF care, experiencing homelessness or living in publicly-subsidized housing.Students are divided into socioeconomic tiers based on their home address, and each tier receives the same...
