A day before taking off for Germany, Bill Belichick admitted he doesn’t speak the native tongue. Not a word, not a phrase.Considering the state of the Patriots, maybe Belichick should start here: Nun haben wir den Salat. The literal translation goes, “Now we have the salad.” But Germans will tell you its true meaning is closer to: “We’re in deep (expletive).”That is exactly where Belichick finds himself just one month after trading for J.C. Jackson, who is not expected to travel with the team overseas for Sunday’s game against the Colts. Belichick reacquired Jackson to stabilize his secondary after early-season injuries decimated the Pats’ cornerback depth. Instead, he imploded. In must-win games the past two weeks, he allowed six catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. One team source explained Jackson’s stateside timeout with one word, “dependability,” referring to how Jackson has long lacked in that department. NEW YORK (AP) — The physical pain of nearly dying when shrapnel from a roadside bomb in Iraq tore through his head 17 years ago was hard enough for ABC newsman Bob Woodruff.Mentally, it was even worse. That’s evident in talking to Woodruff and watching as he takes television viewers on a journey to where his life changed in an instant on Jan. 29, 2006. His first time back to Taji, Iraq, is chronicled in “After the Blast: The Will to Survive,” which airs on ABC Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern and begins streaming on Hulu a day later. At age 44, Woodruff had reached the top of a competitive TV business. He had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s “World News Tonight” and was sent to Iraq at the height of the war there to report on its progress.Riding in a patrolling Iraqi tank, he poked his upper body out to narrate a report when the improvised explosive device exploded. A couple of inches either way, Woodruff was told, and he would have been killed instantly. As it was, he was in a m...The Angels have hired Ron Washington, the 71-year-old’s first job as MLB manager since 2014

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels hired Ron Washington to be their new manager Tuesday. The 71-year-old Washington becomes the oldest current manager. He led the Texas Rangers from 2007-14, winning two AL pennants and going 664–611. He spent the past seven seasons as Atlanta’s third base coach, helping the Braves to their 2021 World Series title.Washington replaced Phil Nevin, who wasn’t re-signed last month after 1 1/2 losing seasons in charge of the long-struggling Angels. Los Angeles is mired in stretches of eight consecutive losing seasons and nine straight non-playoff seasons, both the longest streaks in the majors. The Angels are turning to a veteran baseball mind to get the most out of a long-underachieving franchise with a big payroll and three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, but almost no team success to show for it. Shohei Ohtani, the team’s superstar two-way player, became a free agent this week. Washington knows the AL West well. WASHINGTON (AP) — The first thing Greg Jackson did when he arrived in Lewiston, Maine, was to drive through the city, into its neighborhoods, past the crime scene tape and the boarded-up windows, to get a feel for a community reeling from a mass shooting. The deputy director of the new White House office of gun violence prevention was looking for his starting point. He set to work figuring out what grief and trauma resources were available for families of the victims and where the city could use assistance. He got a briefing from law enforcement. He met with the governor. And he started doling out help. “Most governors and even city leaders see the federal government as a big machine — there’s so many different levers and processes and contacts,” Jackson said in an interview. “So me just being a navigator and being able to help cut through some of the government jargon or get the proper contact within 15 minutes versus two days was huge.” The Oct. 25 shootings at a bowlin...Newfoundland and Labrador’s Union House Arts wins $50K Lacey Prize
