Oakland mayor blindsided by A’s bombshell Vegas deal amid negotiations OAKLAND — Following months and months of uncertainty, Oakland thought it was inching closer to a deal for a new waterfront ballpark for the Oakland As this week, negotiating daily to keep one of baseball’s storied franchises in the city it had called home for five decades. Then, in an instant, it was over.On Wednesday evening, Mayor Sheng Thao received an unexpected call from A’s President Dave Kaval. He kept his words brief: “Heads up, we have a land deal in Las Vegas.”Hours later, the A’s dropped the same bombshell on the rest of Oakland — that the team was nearing an agreement to buy land in Las Vegas and build a $1 billion, 35,000-seat ballpark a mile off the strip, finally ditching the Coliseum in East Oakland that Kaval has spent the past couple years disparaging.Oakland thought it was still “in mid-negotiations — the closest we’ve ever been to landing a deal,” Thao said. Top five Earth Day events in the Bay Area this weekend By many measures, the Bay Area’s environment is a lot cleaner that it was on the first Earth Day in 1970.The air is much less smoggy, cannery wastes aren’t dumped in San Francisco Bay, the pesticide DDT is banned, vehicles emit much less tailpipe pollution, electric cars are expanding in number, leaded gasoline is long gone, recycling programs are widely used, and endangered species — from bald eagles to gray whales — are on the rebound. But there are new challenges that weren’t around 53 years ago when former Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a San Jose State University graduate, joined forces with Denis Hayes, a former Stanford student body president, to found Earth Day. Climate change has made droughts, heat waves and wildfires more severe. Population growth has pushed urban sprawl into wild areas. Fisheries like salmon have crashed. And new chemicals like PFAS compounds pose challenges. As one of America’s centers of environmental activism and o...
